Technological design courses provide students with a variety of learning experiences that focus on the practical application of the principles of engineering, architecture, and design. These activity-based courses emphasize problem solving to meet design challenges in a wide range of areas, which may include apparel and textile design, architectural design, interior design, mechanical and industrial design, and robotics and control systems.
Students learn to apply knowledge of research, historical trends, design, materials, fabrication methods, and testing criteria to develop innovative and environmentally sustainable products, processes, and/or services. The technologies and processes used to create design solutions may include both traditional and computer-based drafting methods, scale models, working prototypes, animations and simulations, displays, portfolios, and presentations.

This course provides students with opportunities to apply a design process to meet a variety of technological challenges. Students will research projects, create designs, build models and/or prototypes, and assess products and/or processes using appropriate tools, techniques, and strategies. Student projects may include designs for homes, vehicles, bridges, robotic arms, clothing, or other products. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to technological design, and will learn about secondary and postsecondary education and training leading to careers in the field.

This course examines how technological design is influenced by human, environmental, financial, and material requirements and resources. Students will research, design, build, and assess solutions that meet specific human needs, using working drawings and other communication methods to present their design ideas. Grade 11 Technological Design, Robotics and Control Systems: TDR 3M1
This course provides students with opportunities to apply the principles of Technological Design to solve challenges, with an emphasis on developing solutions using Robotics and Control Systems. Students will research, design, build and assess solutions that meet specific human needs. Design solutions will be created using traditional fabrication methods and 3D printing. Students will have the opportunity to explore the use of micro-controller based control systems such as Arduino. A variety of input and output devices will be explored, including but not limited to; sound, light and temperature sensors, accelerometer, IR Remote, motor, servo, stepper motor, and LCD display. This course will explore career opportunities in the fields of Engineering, Robotics and Mechatronics as well as the college and/or university program requirements for them.

Grade 12 Technological Design: Robotics and Control System Design: TDR 4M1
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of design advocacy and marketing, while building their design skills and knowledge of professional design practices. Students will apply a systematic design process to research, design, build, and asses solutions that meet specific human needs, using illustrations, presentation drawings, and other methods. Students will enhance problem-solving and communication skills, and explore career opportunities. Students interested in post-secondary education in engineering technology or manufacturing will have the opportunity to further develop design skills (including the use of CAD and 3D MOdeling using Autodesk software) and fabrication skills (using a variety of manufacturing processes such as 3D Printing and laser cutting). Students will continue developing their knowledge of robotics and programming through the use of the Arduino microcontroller development board, and will be introduced to the principles of circuitry and electronic design. Students will practice project management skills in a series of hands-on design and build projects. A key focus in this course is the development of 21st century learning skills such as communication, collaboration, creative thinking and critical thinking.
